Teaching Practice
Reflection 4 (free choice of topic)
During my teaching session, special needs student request to drink water. I noticed my MST always gives this student who has a complex health condition a permission to leave class. This student comes daily from hospital to school with two nurses because she used breathing tube tied with a respirator on her wheelchair. Once this student leaves class I have to stop teaching until she comes back. After a while, the student back and I complete teaching but she interrupts again asking for bathroom defiantly I cannot refuse. As a result of interruptions, a lot of time wasted and I can’t cover all that I planned for this lesson.
This incident made me think deeply about the rights of special needs students who integrate into public school. Once they have right to access the curriculums teachers should find a way to engage them in learning depending on their abilities. At the same time, teachers should be fair with other students give them equal time and attention. In above case, gives this student individual time to cover up what she missed would be better than stopped the whole class. When I thought about this student, I find it unfair to expect that she can finish all requirements for grade two as others students. We should stop put special needs students under stress by comparing their learning outcomes with more healthy students. I have read an article journal written by special needs teacher mentioned that comparing had serious implications on child psychology. In addition, she emphasizes that learning environment should serve SEN by offers proper encouragement.
In general, I found it very challenging to teach special needs students in the regular classrooms. As a student teacher, I learned the importance of making individualized education plan for my future special needs students. Furthermore, I should be aware enough about every case in my classroom especially about their medical condition.
